Ordered and Disordered Source Coding

چکیده
The separation of the information in a vector into order (a permutation) and value (a multiset) is studied. We formulate rate-distortion problems in which order is irrelevant, for which we give conclusive results in cases where the set size approaches infinity. Conversely, we present a distortion measure on partial orders and source coding techniques based on partial orders. Multiple partial orders can be mutually refining, leading to a form of permutation coding for multiple descriptions. Permutation coding of a harmonic frame expansion gives lowcomplexity vector quantizers with low-rate performance superior to that of entropy-constrained scalar quantization.

Nanostructured Single Crystals Sandwiched between Ordered/Disordered Coily and Rod Brushes
Single crystals of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-b-polystyrene (PS), PEG-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), PEG-b-polycaprolactone (PCL), and polyaniline (PANI)-b-PEG-b-PANI were developed from dilute solutions and thin molten films using self-seeding methodology. The PS and PMMA grafted chains were categorized in disordered nano-brushes; however, the PCL and PANI ones were grouped in ordere...
متن کاملFunctional anthology of intrinsic disorder. 2. Cellular components, domains, technical terms, developmental processes, and coding sequence diversities correlated with long disordered regions.
Biologically active proteins without stable ordered structure (i.e., intrinsically disordered proteins) are attracting increased attention. Functional repertoires of ordered and disordered proteins are very different, and the ability to differentiate whether a given function is associated with intrinsic disorder or with a well-folded protein is crucial for modern protein science. However, there...

متن کاملA Novel Approach for Predicting Disordered Regions in A Protein Sequence
OBJECTIVES A number of published predictors are based on various algorithms and disordered protein sequence properties. Although many predictors have been published, the study of protein disordered region prediction is ongoing because different prediction methods can find different disordered regions in a protein sequence. METHODS Therefore we have used a new approach to find the more varying...
متن کاملComparing Models of Evolution for Ordered and Disordered Proteins
Most models of protein evolution are based upon proteins that form relatively rigid 3D structures. A significant fraction of proteins, the so-called disordered proteins, do not form rigid 3D structures and sample a broad conformational ensemble. Disordered proteins do not typically maintain long-range interactions, so the constraints on their evolution should be different than ordered proteins....
